SHOPS BUILDING RENOVATION & ADDITION
Olympic College | Bremerton, Washington
Completion: 2024 | Construction Cost: $11 million
The Shops Building Renovation & Addition project included partial demolition of the existing building, envelope and utility improvements, renovation of interior spaces and a one story addition with two new classrooms to create a 16,200 GSF hub for Olympic College’s top technical programs.
The renovated building provides a solution that emphasizes a new public entry at the primary access on the north east side. An exterior stair tower was removed to enhance the public entry sequence to the building and to expand and open the building toward the adjacent plaza and pedestrian areas. The building’s new site design embraces and maintains street access to the shops building while creating a new stronger connection to the main campus circulation and adjacent plaza, increasing the tie to the rest of campus. The renovated Shops Building reflects the nature of the program as well as elements of the original construction. The building’s existing heavy monolithic mass has been punctured by new glazing and the open, human scale entry and visual connection to the shared program work space offer a natural connection and intuitive wayfinding from the plaza and the campus pedestrian corridor. Clearstory windows were also incorporated to provide substantial natural light to the shops and interior of the building.
Spaces were designed to accommodate current technologies and the flexibility to adopt future technologies without further capital investment. The facility has greatly improved energy performance over the existing facility.
