The existing library at Olympic College was originally constructed in 1962 and expanded in 1976. As a result of a severe winter ice storm, the 1976 portion of the building collapsed, leaving only the original south half of the building intact. The project provided a phased reconstruction of this critical campus center, renovating the north portion of the original building and replacing and expanding the damaged south portion. Retaining only the basic structure, Schreiber Starling Whitehed Architects, together with EHDD of San Francisco, designed a new 41,000-sf library and media center.
The resulting building is situated at the heart of campus and creates two edges of a new campus green. Taking advantage of its prime location at the main campus gateway, the building also incorporates a new 5,000-sf Student Welcome Center and a new clock tower providing both a visual anchor to the adjacent pedestrian mall and a pedestrian rain shelter at its base.
