SOUTH CONSOLIDATED FORENSICS CRIME LABORATORY
Washington State Patrol | Federal Way, Washington
Estimated Completion: 2031 | Construction Cost: $132 million
Current forensic services in the western part of Washington State are fragmented across multiple labs. Due to their size, condition, staff numbers, and location, these labs can't provide fully consolidated forensic services in one convenient location. In 2020, the FLSB completed a Facilities Master Plan, which suggested that instead of maintaining the current distributed services model, the State of Washington would be better served by replacing the outdated labs in Marysville, Seattle, Tacoma, and Olympia with two new, full-service labs. One would be located in the North Sound (near the intersection of Interstate 5 and 405 in the Lynnwood/Everett area) and one in the South Sound (near the intersection of Interstate 5 and 405 in the Renton area).
Starling Whitehead & Lux Architects is working with Washington State Patrol to complete feasibility studies of multiple sites to review site suitability and cost comparison of building a newly constructed facility versus renovation of an existing building. Upon site selection and final budget approval, SWL Architects, supported by Crime Lab Design, will complete design of WSP’s new South Consolidated Forensic Crime Laboratory. This new lab aims to address the growing demand for forensic services in the northwestern region of the state.
