The long-anticipated ribbon-cutting for Lake Washington Institute of Technology's Center for Design took place on September 24, 2026. The occasion began with the dedication of "Snoqualmie Pass," a sculpture by artist James Madison, anchoring the Center for Design's outdoor courtyard. The new facility supports LWTech's Art, Design, Illustration, Architecture, and Gaming programs, and includes an event space with accommodation for up to 501 guests.
Introducing: Starling Whitehead & Lux Architects
We are delighted to announce a new chapter in the evolution of our firm. Effective today, Schreiber Starling Whitehead Architects has become Starling Whitehead & Lux Architects.
This change reflects the transformative and organic growth our firm has already experienced through the years and reinforces our commitment to public architecture now and into the future. While the name may be a new iteration, we will continue to maintain the same level of dedication, design excellence, and partnership that have always been the cornerstone of our architectural practice for the last thirty-five years. We are excited about the new opportunities this evolution presents and look forward to sharing this journey with all of you.
OC’s Welding Program Gets a New Home
SSW in the news:
The Kitsap Sun spotlighted the need for skilled labor on the Kitsap Peninsula and the opportunities the renovated Olympic College facility will provide to the local trades industry.
Olympic College’s Bremerton Building 14, which houses the college’s welding and advanced manufacturing training programs, is getting a facelift. A major exterior and interior renovation is underway at Building 14 that will correct facility and space deficiencies, as well as incorporate two additional classrooms via an addition.
The renovated building will reflect the nature of the building program, as well as mix elements of the existing construction with the aesthetic vocabulary that has been established on campus. The design will also create a stronger connection to the main campus circulation and adjacent plaza, better tying the building to the rest of campus.
The renovation is expected to be completed in early 2024.
Winter Kickoff: Gifts Galore
SSW folks raised the curtain on the holiday season with a happy hour and a rip-roaring round of gift giving (and thieving!), with everything from potted plants to a JP Patches lunchbox. Salut to the season!
Summer Spikes
It’s been a summer of rain-outs, record heat, great digs and sweet spikes for the SSW Volleyball team in the A/E Volleyball League! The team has enjoyed success this season and solid contributions on the court from all teammates.
In the most recent week, SSW came out on top in all five matches for the first time this season! One game in particular was a nail-biter that saw each team exchange points through most of the game until Monica sealed the deal with a run of 4 aces in a row!
As we head into the last week of the season, we hope to keep the hot service hand and rack up a few more wins!
Ahoy, SSW!
When the sun is out, the architects will roam! SSW enjoyed a beautiful summer day by taking a trip to West Seattle via the King County Metro Water Taxi for an extended lunch-break.
After a blissful trip on the water taxi, we enjoyed lunch at Marination Ma Kai under a clear blue sky with views looking towards the downtown skyline. It took some coaxing to get everyone on the water taxi and back to the office, but the views of Mount Rainier on the trip back across Elliot Bay made thoughts of work on the return ride a little more bearable.
The jury is still out on productivity that afternoon, but there was nary a hungry stomach to be found!
**No, these photos have not been retouched. Yes, the sky was really THAT BLUE!!**
Thurston County Readiness Center Ribbon Cutting
On June 25, 2022, the ribbon was cut and the Thurston County Readiness Center was officially opened! Representatives from the National Guard Bureau, Washington Military Department, and Department of Enterprise Services, as well as soldiers that will train in the facility, were present to commemorate the occasion.
Ross Whitehead, Principal in Charge on the project, was on hand to address the crowd and provide a guided walk-through of the facility. Highlights of the design include enhancing the experience of the individual soldier by providing ample casual gathering areas throughout the building, providing access to daylight in every space including corridors and interior offices, and using simple, robust materials that will stand the test of time and require minimal maintenance.
Cheers to Keith: A Fond Farewell
It’s with great respect, admiration, and a few tears that we announce Keith Schreiber’s retirement as of January 2022. Keith began his design and construction career as a Project Officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. After his service, he gained experience in a few different roles in Architecture and Contracts before partnering with Phil Lane and opening the door to Schreiber & Lane Architects in 1987. For 35 years, Keith has served as our fearless and cheerful leader, dedicated to public architecture and the positive impact it has on Washington communities.
A long-awaited celebration took place on June 3 to honor our founding principal and mark his retirement. Friends and associates gathered for canapes and cocktails at the top of Hotel Sorrento, with toasts on the terrace in tribute to Keith and his 44-year professional career.
Keith addressed the crowd saying, “It has been my great honor and privilege to work together with such a group of talented and dedicated architects. I am so very proud of the organization we are today and the impact we have had working with and for clients who care passionately about creating and improving the public architecture that serves our communities. I could not be more excited about the future of this great organization.”
Thank you, Keith. May your days of retirement be filled with blue skies and bliss.
At Long Last
All of SSW assembled to officially celebrate the return to the office with a stroll to historic Pioneer Square and a tasty lunch at the beloved London Plane. What a delight to sit across the table from one another again.
SSW Holiday Festival Extravaganza
On 1 December 2021, SSW staff gathered at JarrBar to kick off a holiday season of festive activities with a round or two Schreibers and Starlings. The space was perfectly pleasant and the custom cocktails and beautiful snacks were a feast for both the eyes and taste buds. A good time was had by all.
Other activities on the 2021 SSW Holiday Festival Extravaganza calendar include a winter crafternoon making snowflakes in front of a cozy digital fire, a cheerful solstice brunch to celebrate the start of longer days ahead, and twelve days of festive goodies, hand-delivered to each desk in the SSW office, which was spruced up for the season with a notably festive decor. Our evening at JarrBar was a magnificent way for this year’s SSW Holiday Festival Extravaganza to commence.
Happy Holidays to you and yours, from all of us at SSW Architects!
